Dorms

AUC offers dormitory housing with the old dorms in Zamalek and the new dorms on the New Campus. Each campus has its own advantages and disadvantages, discussed further on the individual pages.

Apartments

Some students live in apartments in Cairo rather than live in the dorms. This is more common for Cairean students, who will often live with their parents. International students also live in apartments, though it is more common for year-long students to move out of the dorm second semester into apartments. For some people, the dorms are too restictive: you take your chances with a roommate, you have to deal with potentially noisy floormates, you have to share a bathroom, you are not allowed to have friends stay the night without paying US$20, you are not allowed to have alcohol, and the sides of the living spaces are gender-segregated. Some people, on the other hand, enjoy the immediate community that dorms offer: the convenience of being near your friends, the ease of meeting new people and the shared experience of living with other students.
